About Threes Steps to Cyber Heaven
What if Heaven is in a Cybercity?
In my definition, cybercity is a blurry concept. It reflects my inner self and my imagination in reality. I hope cyber city may come one day, like the Kingdom of God, but it doesn’t. Before the upside-down of the Kingdom of God, chaos appears everywhere in my city. Even the darkest moment never end, hope will resound one day at the bottom of my heart. All tracks reflect my thought to my home and Christian reflection.
“The Divine Temptation” illustrates, the temptation is not evil at all. Because of temptation, whatever it is personal and social, it gives us a chance to mediate who we are, what’s our purpose of life. This track is my mediation of the temptation of Christ in the bible.
“Darken Hallelujah” penetrates how hypocrites act in daily life especially Christians and churches. They speak louder than action. They sing hallelujah at Sunday service with lip service. When my home city starts to chaos, they pretend like a peacemaker. Their heart is dark, and never admit they are a sinner and still sinned to all aspect. For example, comment adultery, support the totalitarianism and defraud offering. That’s why they are singing the darken hallelujah in their heart.
“The dark side of my soul” was inspired by the 16-century poem “The Dark Night of The Soul”. It was written by Catholic saint John Of The Cross. It is about a spiritual crisis in the journey toward union with God. The final spiritual destination is about embracing our darkness. It’s because God is God and it is unknowable. Only blinding faith leads us to God, although life is tough. Question is, would you willing to swallow the unusual life beats?
"Life Enclosed" is my first collaboration during the chaotic situation in the Lockdown in the UK. Yet, at the start of the lockdown, I was lacking motivation with my PhD research and my creativity, life seemed like it was in slow motion. Then my friend asked me to collaborate in creating music and since then my motivation has slowly returned.
"My God and My Love" is my personal reflection of the Old Testament. During the political threats and protests, Hong Kong becomes a focal point in the global public. It is uneasy to fight for the Justice in the short period, but I do pray we never lost hope in the post-apocalypse period.
"Why would you ever complain, O Jacob,
or, whine, Israel, saying,
“God has lost track of me.
He doesn’t care what happens to me”?
Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening?
God doesn’t come and go. God lasts.
He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine.
He doesn’t get tired out, doesn’t pause to catch his breath.
And he knows everything, inside and out.
He energizes those who get tired,
gives fresh strength to dropouts.
For even young people tire and drop out,
young folk in their prime stumble and fall.
But those who wait upon God get fresh strength.
They spread their wings and soar like eagles,
They run and don’t get tired,
they walk and don’t lag behind." (Isaiah 40, The Message)
A Story Steeped in Sound
Hong Kong electronic music producer
/music journalist/curator, but now I am doing my PhD research in theology, rock music and spirituality via the musical works of Icelandic band, Sigur Ros in Birmingham, UK.
My career started as a music show curator in a mountain of the 2012 Shan Zhai Music (山寨音樂) Festival. After establishing an excellent reputation, I decided to become a music journalist. In 2015, I joined a cultural magazine where he was responsible for writing music news, artist interviews and feature stories about the future development of Hong Kong Music. In 2016, I curated four sets of rooftop music festivals by sourcing a crowdfunding campaign. In 2019, I published my book (道成搖滾) about Rock music and theology in the Hong Kong Book Fair 2019. It is a pioneer self project o bombard the whole Asia region theological circle.
Long a staple of my music journey.
After the great success to curate music shows and rooftop music festivals in Hong Kong, I decided to push my limit to produce music myself. Without losing Avant-grade ethos, I specialize in making unusual soundscapes, heavy dark beats and aggressive negative emotions. It triggers the birth of my first EP, "3 Steps to Cyber Heaven".
I actually started taking guitar at age 18, but later I discovered myself love to arrange music with my computer. I produce music simply expressing my dark side of my Christian faith. I believe that the experiential and ambient sound design is the key to experience heaven itself. My aim is to become the first Christian theologian by producing experimental electronica.
After I explore my musical soundscapes, I recently collaborate with my UK friend and release a track "Life Enclosed"—a song created for the sake of one's boredom and sanity during the Lockdown in the UK.
